FEELING STRESSED? HOW YOU THINK ABOUT STRESS MATTERS! In a TED talk Psychologist Kelly McGoniga encouraged listeners to change how they think about stress by viewing it as a positive. New science reveals that believing stress is harmful increases the likelihood of illness and/or death. Kelly says we should view stress as a method our body uses to help us rise to the occasion. The stress hormone, oxytocin, protects the body from stress and it is enhanced by social contact and support. Human connection and caring for others creates stress resilience. So, reach out and don’t stress out over stress.

Once these questions are answered, Bruce can put together a plan to accomplish the goals, with a result that will improve one’s quality of life.

Bob Sheeley, CPA, provided a brief overview of the changes occurring with our 2018 taxes as a result of the 2017 Tax Reform Act. Bob’s disclaimer: An expert teaching a seminar about the new tax act stated he had spent over 100 hours studying it, and he still didn’t know more than 10% of its implications. Some highlights: Standard deduction is gone – it is now part of an itemized deduction maximum; there will be more schedules required; 37% is the highest tax rate; $11.2 million estate tax credit; and in 2025 everything reverts back to the 2017 regulations. The best thing about the reforms: they create job security for Bob and will most likely result in saving some tax dollars for individuals.

George Ferrin, of Armor Wealth Management, introduced the concept of building buckets to achieve long term financial success. Different buckets are recommended for reasons such as: tax savings; avoiding risks; protection; access to cash, and guaranteed returns. Life and disability insurance are 2 buckets used for protection, while retirement savings accounts and long-term care insurance are buckets used for long term protection. Once your buckets are established, they can be utilized to work together by using benefits from one to pay for benefits from another. The sooner one gets started building buckets, the better the results. Contact George or Fred Badyna for assistance in building buckets.

It is also about one-third the price of solid wood flooring. The distressed look for wood is still popular and the high gloss look is not. When it comes to carpet, the flatter carpet look is becoming more popular.

Jake describes our real competition as ourselves. Real competitors have “grit”; “employ setbacks as a lesson”; and “end on empty”. He recommends having a goal to catch and pass the “next runner”. Competitors finish what they start and finish on an empty tank. Jake created a successful business utilizing these techniques and offers weekly encouragement via his podcast; “Compete Everyday”.

The next time you wash your hands in a public restroom recall the following image: A photo featured in a Playboy magazine of a naked dog that just emerged from the water. That will remind you to “shake” (which is what a dog does when it comes out of the water) your hands and then “fold” (which is where the feature photo is located in the magazine) your paper towel so as to use only one towel. TED talks presented at Tuesday’s meeting focused on memory techniques and conservation. A memory technique is to create a bizarre image about what you are trying to remember that is tied to something that you already know. By using only one paper towel when drying hands, we can save over 571 million pounds of paper. How bizarre!

Guest speaker, Lance Spellman, spoke to us about the “cloud” and how it has become a cost-effective method for moving company infrastructures off-premises. Driving factors for making the move to the cloud include: better security; flexibility; easier collaboration; and reduced expense. Dropbox, a cloud service, is a great tool for storing files and providing or restricting access to such files. Encryption of data on a hard drive is not a defense against ransomware. The best defense is a good, quality backup system. The cloud has permitted Lance’s company to eliminate the need for a brick and mortar office.
